What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to get pregnant after a year of trying, or six months in women 35 and older. Or, it may be challenging to stay pregnant (frequent miscarriages or stillbirths).

While infertility is common, your risk of infertility increases as you get older. Overexercising, stress, and exposure to toxins, also affects your ability to conceive.

What causes infertility?

Infertility can occur from many different causes. In women, infertility usually occurs from issues with ovulation — when your ovaries release an egg.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that also affects ovulation. Women with PCOS may have eight or fewer periods a year. PCOS is a common cause of infertility in women.

Women might also struggle with infertility if there’s a structural problem affecting their reproductive organs. For example, scar tissue from endometriosis that blocks the fallopian tube.

Though, it’s important to note that infertility doesn’t just happen for women. Men may also have health issues that affect fertility, like unhealthy sperm or a low sperm count.

What can I expect during an infertility evaluation?

You can expect a patient-centered evaluation when you visit Dr. Roofeh for help with infertility. Dr. Roofeh asks detailed questions about your menstrual cycle, gynecological history, and family history.

He also conducts a physical and pelvic exam and runs lab work to check ovulation and hormone levels. He may order an ultrasound test to evaluate your ovaries. Dr. Roofeh may also suggest your partner undergo infertility testing to check sperm health.

What are some of the infertility treatments?

Treatment for infertility depends on the underlying cause. If you have an underlying gynecological condition affecting your ability to conceive, Dr. Roofeh starts by addressing that health issue to improve your chances of pregnancy. He may also perform da Vinci® robotic surgery to fix any structural abnormalities.

If the cause of your infertility is unknown, Dr. Roofeh offers ovulation induction. He prescribes medication that increases the number of eggs you produce during your menstrual cycle. He uses ultrasound imaging to evaluate the dominant follicle (the follicle in the ovary large enough to grow and release the mature egg).

Ovulation induction may help improve your chances of conception. If you continue to have problems getting pregnant, Dr. Roofeh may suggest other infertility treatments like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
