What causes urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence occurs when you leak urine uncontrollably and involuntarily. You may dribble urine or completely empty your bladder before being able to get to a bathroom.

Incontinence can arise from nerve damage, overactive bladder muscles, or weak pelvic floor muscles.

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support your uterus, bladder, vagina, and rectum, helping to control urination.

What are the different types of urinary incontinence?

There are four main types of urinary incontinence:

Stress incontinence

Stress incontinence occurs when there is pressure on your abdomen that forces urine to leave your bladder.

Sneezing, laughing, coughing, or any physical activity that makes you contract your abdominal muscles, may cause urine leakage.

This type of incontinence typically develops in people who are pregnant, who’ve had a vaginal childbirth, or are experiencing menopause (hormone changes) that weakens their pelvic floor muscles.

Urge incontinence

Urge incontinence, also known as overactive bladder, causes the sudden need to urinate. The need is so strong that you may leak urine before you even reach the bathroom. The condition may be caused by nerve problems or a bladder infection.

Overflow incontinence

This type of incontinence occurs when you have the urge to urinate but only release a small amount when you do. This can be due to a blockage or weak bladder muscles. Since you can’t empty your bladder as you should, it gets too full and leaks out.

Mixed incontinence

Mixed incontinence means you have both urge and stress incontinence.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

Dr. Roofeh may order testing to determine the cause of your urinary incontinence. Urodynamic tests can provide helpful information like urine flow rate and the amount of urine in your bladder after urination.

Once he determines the underlying cause and the severity of your symptoms, Dr. Roofeh may recommend:

  • Bladder training
  • Pelvic floor therapy
  • Medications
  • Medical devices that block urine flow
  • Surgery
  • Mid-urethral sling

Dr. Roofeh has extensive experience performing surgical treatment for urinary incontinence and offers surgical care that not many OB/GYNs provide.
